Abortion Pill Background

The abortion pill is a pregnancy termination method that uses the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. It works by first blocking progesterone, a necessary hormone for a pregnancy to continue. Then, it causes the uterus to contract to expel the pregnancy and related tissue.

This process comes with abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, heavier than a monthly period. While the amount of bleeding varies depending on the woman and other factors, blood clots the size of a lemon are considered normal.

Due to the way medical abortion works and how it causes intense bleeding, it is not safe for all women.

Abortion Pill Safety: When Is it Not an Option?

The abortion pill is not considered a safe option for you in the following cases:

  • You are beyond the FDA’s approved timeframe of ten weeks of gestation.*
  • You have an ectopic pregnancy (implanted outside the uterus)
  • You have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place.
  • You have a history of bleeding disorders or anemia.
  • You have chronic adrenal failure.
  • You have certain heart or blood vessel diseases.
  • You have severe kidney, liver, or lung disease.
  • You have an uncontrolled seizure disorder.
  • You take blood thinners or certain steroid medicines.
  • You are allergic to the drugs mifepristone or misoprostol.

This list isn’t exhaustive. There could be other medical conditions that make the abortion pill unsafe for you. Always talk with a medical professional about your health history and receive an ultrasound before ever considering taking the abortion pill.

*Additionally, state laws impact the availability of the abortion pill. Even though the FDA approves abortion through ten weeks from a medical standpoint, this doesn’t mean medical abortion is legally available. Florida restricts abortion to six weeks of gestation.
